Chemistry

We Are Aliens! related chemistry activities for your class room, devised by Steve Althorpe and Judith Green. Includes games, activities and worksheets. Supporting videos demonstrate the activities. Activities are available to download as discrete packages, or you can download all the chemistry resources as a single package.

Classroom Activities:

Life in the Freezer

If there is life elsewhere in our solar system it’s likely to live in a pretty cold environment. Students investigate the effect of antifreezes on the  freezing point of water and how it can allow fragile cells to survive extreme cold.

Curriculum areas covered:

  • Suitable for KS3-4
  • Depression of melting point
  • Data analysis
  • Practical skills
  • How science works

Molecules of Life

A suite of games designed to promote thinking, learning and understanding as well as being enjoyable and engaging. They are all based around molecules that play key roles in life on Earth.

Curriculum areas covered:

  • Suitable for KS4
  • Chemical Formulae
  • Bonding and molecular shape
  • Carbon cycle

Rates of Reaction

High levels of ultraviolet radiation out in space drive reactions that turn white beads into their coloured form. Students investigate how temperature affects the rate at which the beads turn back to white.

Curriculum areas covered:

  • Suitable for KS4 (readily adapted for KS3)
  • Experimental design
  • Reaction rates
  • Collision theory
  • Data analysis

Activation Enthalpy

This simple experiment allows students to concentrate on the theory behind the reaction and thus develop their understanding of reaction rates. The data they collect allows them to calculate the activation enthalpy of the reaction.

Curriculum areas covered:

  • Suitable for KS5
  • Reaction rates and collision theory
  • Activation enthalpy
  • Equilibria and Le Chatelier’s principle
  • Data analysis

Ice Cores

In this practical activity students analyse ice cores extracted from the icy worlds of Enceladus or Europa.
This is traditional chemistry set in an exciting, very non-traditional context.

Curriculum areas covered:

  • Suitable for KS5
  • Qualitative analysis
  • Inorganic formulae
  • Acid base titration
  • Oxidation states and redox reactions
